The Minecraft Villager is one of the more useful mobs in the game. Villager trading in Minecraft has become popular in the latest versions of the game, you can get various goods from Emeralds to enchanted books and many more exciting items! That is why you may consider building a villager breeder.

By making a Minecraft villager breeder it will be much easier to supply your Minecraft villager trading hall if you have one, if you don’t it is still easier to breed them than to go around your world and find villages and the right villagers for your trade.

To learn more about Minecraft Villager jobs, and Minecraft Villager trades that you will get out of them, we recommend you to check out our Minecraft Villager Trading Guide which covers those topics.

Requirements for breeding Minecraft Villagers

To breed Villagers in Minecraft you will need to meet some requirements. The process of Villager breeding is slightly different and more complicated than breeding other mobs in Minecraft. A few factors that will affect the breeding process are:

  • At least 2 Minecraft Villagers
  • The breeding area
  • Food items
  • Willingness

Two Minecraft Villagers standing in a Minecraft Village

Obviously to breed Villagers you will need to have at least 2 of them, you can have more than that but the bare minimum is 2. Each Villager needs to have a bed, if you have two Minecraft Villagers, and you want a third one you will need an additional bed.

The Villager Breeding area needs to be large enough, at least a 3 block area per Villager. Also, when placing the beds make sure that each bed has two empty blocks above it.

Unlike Minecraft animals, you can not feed food to Minecraft Villagers to make them breed. In order for the Villager breeder to work you will need to collect a larger amount of food and drop it to the Villagers. If a Villager has excess food, they will throw it to other Villagers so you do not have to worry about providing food to each Villager.

Also, Minecraft Villagers do not have gender roles, but they follow the concept of consent, when you meet the requirements like shelter, food, etc the rest of the process remains with the Villagers. Willingness usually depends on the amount of food they have, so that means that you need to keep providing them with food in order for them to keep breeding.

Villagers can use the following foods to breed:

  • 3 Bread
  • 12 Carrots
  • 12 Potatoes
  • 12 Beetroots
