In Minecraft, coal is one of the most important resources you can find. Used for many things, like making torches, smelting ores and cooking food. In this article, we will explore why coal is so useful and how you can find it in the game. By the end you will discover everything that you need to know about Coal in Minecraft.
Where to find Coal in Minecraft?
The Minecraft Coal ore is one of many ores that generate naturally in the Overworld. Also one of the two Minecraft Ores that can generate above the Sea level, the other Ore being Minecraft Iron. But what is the best level for Coal in Minecraft? Coal generates between the levels Y=0 and Y=256, but the best level to find Minecraft Coal is the level Y=96.

Like we mentioned above, Coal can be found both on surface and in caves, but it can also be found in the following Minecraft structures:
- Dungeons
- Mineshafts
- Igloos
- Shipwrecks
- Strongholds
- Ancient Cities
- Woodlands Mansions
- Underwater Ruins
- Ruined Portals
- Villages
Out of all these structures Coal has the highest chances of spawning in Igloos and Underwater Ruins, although you can only find a maximum of 8 pieces of Coal, while in Ancient Cities you can find up to 15 pieces of Minecraft Coal at once! One other way to get Coal is by killing hostile Mobs, currently only the Wither Skeleton can drop Coal when it dies. Wither Skeletons are located in the Nether dimension, specifically in Nether Fortresses.
Obviously, just like any other Minecraft Ore, Coal is most commonly found underground in caves. To get larger amounts of Minecraft Coal you will need to go on a mining trip. Like mentioned above, Coal can be found until the level Y=0, everything above that Coal will be fairly common.
Coal veins can spawn from 5 to 30+ Coal ores if two veins are spawned next to each other. Therefore, Coal in Minecraft can be easily minted and gathered especially if you have the Fortune 3 enchantment on your pickaxe. Also, you can mine coal with any Pickaxe.
How to make Coal in Minecraft?
In Minecraft, you can not actually “make” Coal, instead you need to mine it like we mentioned above, Coal is found either on the surface or in caves. That is the only way to obtain this material besides finding it in Minecraft structures.
How to make Charcoal in Minecraft?
Charcoal is the alternative to Minecraft Coal and unlike Coal it can be crafted. Crafted by placing Wood Logs in a furnace and by burning them. Charcoal acts exactly like regular Coal in Minecraft, but they cannot stack.
You can also build a Minecraft Charcoal farm by watching the video down below. Easy to build and it does not require a lot of materials, the only downside is that you will need a lot of logs.
What can you do with Coal in Minecraft?
Even though Minecraft Coal is one of the more important materials in the game it has limited crafting options. At the moment you can only craft the following items with Coal:
- Coal Block
- Torches
- Soul Torches
- Firecharge
- Campfire
And like we said above, the main use for both Coal and Charcoal is for fuel.
Understanding Minecraft Coal can make your gameplay much smoother and more efficient. Whether you are lighting up your mines, cooking food, or crafting items, coal is a resource you will rely on often. We hope this guide has helped you learn how to find and use coal effectively.
