A good tip I always try to remember is that it doesn't matter how many rod hits the other player gets on you - if you can get the last rod hit (at the right range) directly before the hit exchange, you'll almost always come out of the hit exchange the winner. Not the winner of the fight, maybe, but you'll have landed one or two extra hits. People can look really good by hitting someone with the rod 3 or 4 times before hitting them, but the rod hits only matter if the person is at the right range. Just make sure you land a rod right before the other guy is able to hit you, and you should be golden.
