Am I allowed to hide behind a tree to ambush the enemy?

I was in an ArenaPVP ranked match, and was sneaking behind a tree on my side of the map. The opponent came to my side looking for me, and I ambushed him from behind. I wasn't camping to draw out the game, or hiding on top. I was simply hiding behind a tree.The guy told me that I would be banned for camping, but is it really bannable just to try to get the preemptive strike? I mean, it's their responsibility to watch their surroundings.
