Splash potion hitbox?

I presumed the hitbox is the same as what you see using f3+bIf it is why do potions sometimes miss the front of the hitbox? with speed II it seems they miss the front of the hitbox 100% of the time, even offline in vanilla survival.
Anyone know?

Only thing I could think would be if they were thrown from a players centre & the player is moving faster than the potion. However this wouldn't make sense as then the potion would hit the front of the hitbox straight away.
