We all use hotkeys to change between items and some times to put armor but when u use ur mouse buttons to do it ,it wont work for some reasons
for example: u have your chestplate in ur 8place on the hotbar and u bind the 8 key for mouse4
when u hover above the chestplace and press the mouse4 it wont put it on
how ever tehre is a mod maker that made a mod that fix that if will be possible to add that
i can the video for it if it is allowed

try to use a macro program to make the mouse buttons be like keyboard keys and set it the same in minecraft and that should work
