This problem only came up in the last month or so. I play in 1.8.9 and use 1280 x 720 fullscreen on a 1080p monitor. Chat doesn't show up ingame. When I enter chat I cannot see the text field and the text is low, as in off screen. I only see messages sent minutes ago. However, this problem does not occur in when in windowed mode or in 1080p fullscreen.

I tried to re-do everything you said.
It seems like it won't work in the fullscreen mode unless your screen resolution is set to same - 1280x720.

When you are not in the fullscreen mode, your resolution isn't 1280x720 and the chat and other things are working. Once you go to the fullscreen mode, it changes your Minecraft resolution but the chat is in the same size as it was while you were not in the fullscreen mode.


Possible solution: Set your screen resolution to 1280x720 (just like your Minecraft fullscreen resolution) and restart your client (close the client and launcher and open it again).
