Can you add mod where you can select shortcut key for example sword or water bucket in your hotbar. It auto selects your choosen item from your hotbar no matter what hotbar slot it is. (It cant select item from your inventory)
This mod may help beginners and other players, when being backstabbed in pvp gamemodes.
