In 1.9 semi-transparent pixels on skins were introduced. We should add it to 1.8.9. It works on emotes and the tab list. Sk1er has done it in his "patcher" mod. This proves that it's possible. This will add more customization to 1.8 which already exists in 1.9+ and forge. It should be easy to implement, and it would be a large improvement.
