Minecraft 1.20 Pottery

There are two different types of pots in Minecraft as of 1.20. The first one being the flower pot. This one was added years ago and has received changes over the years. The new decorated pot is part of the Trails and Tales update.

How to make a Flower Pot in Minecraft?

The flower pot recipe in Minecraft is very similar to the recipe for the new decorated pot in Minecraft. All the Minecraft pots can be crafted using bricks. To craft a flower pot, you have to arrange three bricks in the form of a bucket. Just like you would craft a bucket with iron ingots but with bricks instead of iron ingots.

How to make a decorated Pot in Minecraft?

We just mentioned that decorated pots can be crafted with bricks as well. Simply align four bricks in the crafting table as follows:


These decorated pots will then be blank. They do not have any symbols on them and look like big flower pots. If you want to decorate them, you will have to use so-called pottery sherds. The Minecraft 1.20 Trails and Tales Update comes with 20 different pottery sherds for you to find.

To craft a decorated pot with a pottery sherd, you will have to replace the bricks in the crafting recipe. You can replace as many bricks as you would like to. You can have one pattern on the pot, two, or even four. It all depends on what you want to use it for and how you want it to look. There are countless variations for you to explore.

How do you get Bricks?

Now that you know that you will require bricks for the decorated pots and flower pots, let us take a look into how you can get them. You can get bricks through smelting clay. You can find clay underwater scattered around your world. If you are close to a lake, or an ocean, then you should be able to find some clay in no time. All you have to do then, is put it into a furnace and smelt it to get bricks.


You can also get the bricks through trading with a villager. Villagers with the mason job, will trade you bricks for emeralds. If you have a steady source for emeralds, then you will be able to get bricks in no time. This is extremely useful if you are planning on using a lot of decorated pots in your builds. Maybe you are building a museum, or using them in another way.

Where can you find Pottery Sherds?

You can find pottery sherds scattered across the world in archaeological sites. They can be found in suspicious sand and suspicious gravel. You will have to use the new brush tool to unveil what is hidden in the sand or gravel.


Some pottery sherds are easier to find than others. Unlike armor trims, they cannot be duplicated, which does make some of them rare. However, you can easily get your shards back if you ever used them in a crafting process.

All you have to do is break the decorated pots. They will then drop the bricks and the pottery sherds that you used to craft the decorated pots. One thing to keep in mind, all pots can be destroyed with one click. If your item is enchanted with silk touch, the decorated pot will drop instead of the sherds and bricks.

Is there anything else you should know?

The brand-new decorated pots give you countless possibilities. You can use them in your buildings. For example, as pillars, or to create a wall with them. They are much bigger than the flower pots and are not a full block, which means that you can also build a water elevator with them, or allow them to see through gaps.

You can also use them as bigger flower pots. The top part of the decorated pot does not count into its hit box. This allows you to walk over it and also to place a flower pot there. This will make it look like a big flower pot and can be used as a decoration.


The Trails and Tales Update is all about exploration. And these new pottery sherds and decorated pots definitely help improve the exploration aspect of the game.
