Axolotls are much more useful than you might think. They are, in fact, the cutest predator in Minecraft. You can take them with you on an adventure or use them to loot ocean monuments much easier.

Keep reading to find out what Minecraft axolotl colors exist, how to breed axolotls, and everything else you should know!

Where can you find Axolotls?

Not all the Minecraft Axolotl variations spawn naturally. One can only be obtained through taming. The other four variations can be found in lush caves. They spawn inside of water near clay. Keep an eye out for lush caves when caving.

Sometimes you may not be able to take all of the axolotls you find with you. In this case, pick them up with a bucket and release them again. This will cause them to despawn. You can use the Badlion Client waypoint mod to remember the location later. You can find out more about Badlion Client and download it here.

How to breed Axolotls in Minecraft?

If you want to get the rare axolotl in Minecraft, then you will have to breed axolotls. We just now mentioned that four axolotl variations spawn naturally. This means that you can obtain the pink, brown, gold, and cyan ones naturally. The blue axolotl in Minecraft does not generate naturally.

Minecraft Axolotl Types
Axolotls take 20 minutes to grow up fully. If you want to reduce the duration, feed them tropical fish in a bucket. Every tropical fish in a bucket reduces the duration by 10%. If you have a steady supply of tropical fish, then you can get the rare blue axolotl in no time.

How to get the Blue Axolotl and what do Axolotls eat in Minecraft?

To breed two axolotls, you have to feed them their favorite food. Feed two axolotls a bucket of tropical fish each. The offspring will then have one of their parents’ colors. But they also have a 1 in 1200 chance of turning out to be the blue variation. This is the rarest axolotl.

How to tame an Axolotl in Minecraft?

You cannot tame axolotls in Minecraft, unfortunately. You can still take them with you, though. Make sure to have a bucket with you when caving. If you happen to stumble across an axolotl, you can pick it up and take it with you.

What are Axolotls useful for?

As you have already learned, you can take axolotls with you. But there is actually much more that they can help you with. They attack every water mob in the game except for turtles, frogs, and dolphins. If you help them out, then you will get the regeneration 1 effect.

If you are planning to explore an ocean monument, then make sure to take a couple of axolotls with you. They will help you against the guardians. In addition to that, they will give you the regeneration 1 effect that we just mentioned. Assisting the axolotls in combat will also take away your mining fatigue effect.

They also share the regeneration effect between them. If they receive enough damage, they will play dead and trigger the regeneration abilities. So make sure to bring as many axolotls as possible to increase the duration. Just keep in mind that it is capped at two minutes.

Is there anything else I should know?

You do not have to use buckets to take axolotls with you. You can also use a lead. Remember that axolotls can only stay outside of water for up to five minutes. They will then start taking damage.

If they are navigating on their own, they will navigate toward the closest source of water, which is at least two blocks deep.
