What if you could have the ability to add custom tools, structures, and even game modes, right into vanilla Minecraft?

Better yet, imagine adding these custom game features to your favorite Minecraft Client. All of this is made possible with the Minecraft data pack feature. In this article, we will show you everything you need to know about data packs in Minecraft, including where to find them and how to install them.

What are Minecraft data packs?

Minecraft data packs come in a ".zip" file format and interact with Minecraft. Like a Minecraft texture pack, within these ".zip" files are subfiles, which act as a set of special instructions for Minecraft. Developers can use these files to create custom items, events, and more!

How are Minecraft data packs different from Modpacks?

Unlike Minecraft Modpacks, data packs do not require third-party software to run in Minecraft. You can simply add them to the folder while remaining in vanilla Minecraft. This means you do not have to download software just to add custom game features, improving your playing experience.

In addition, data packs allow you to add custom features and mods to pre-existing clients like Badlion Client or Lunar Client. Why play with your new pack on vanilla Minecraft when you can reap the benefits of a client such as Badlion Client, which has countless performance enhancements and over 100 Minecraft mods?

How to find data packs for Minecraft

A simple google search will yield numerous sources for downloading Minecraft data packs. However, the easiest and safest way to download them is through the Badlion Client pack finder. You can access this feature on Badlion Client, which allows you to find and install them quickly.

To get started, download Badlion Client from here if you have not already done so. Follow all the installation prompts until you can open the launcher. Once open, select any Minecraft version past 1.16.5 and start the game.

Launching Minecraft
Unlike Minecraft resource packs, data packs apply to individual worlds. If you are on a newer version of Minecraft (1.19.4 or above), click "Create New World," then head over to the "More" tab. Once there, or if you are running an older version of Minecraft (in which case the option should already be present), you should see an option for "Data Packs" on your screen. Clicking this button will bring you to a selection menu, which will look very similar to the resource pack menu.

As previously mentioned, Badlion Client offers a way to discover many new packs called the data pack finder. This can be accessed by pressing the "Browse BLC Datapacks" button.

Initially, you will see a variety of packs from which you can choose. On the top of the pack finder menu, you should see tags to adjust your search query further. In addition, you can use the version section to sort for a specific Minecraft version, which helps sort out incompatible packs.

Common issues when trying to install data packs

While installing data packs in Minecraft is meant to be a quick and easy task, issues can arise that cause you headaches. Here are some common issues you might face, along with several ways to deal with them.

"My Minecraft data pack does not show up in the pack menu"
  1. If you have added a data pack file to your pack folder but do not see it in Minecraft, try closing and restarting Minecraft. In addition, make sure you have added the pack correctly to the following folder: ".minecraft\saves\{your world name}/datapacks."
  2. You most likely have an improperly formatted or corrupted data pack file if none of the above works. Check to make sure your pack contains a pack.mcmeta file when you click on the pack ".zip" folder. Without this file, Minecraft will not recognize your pack.

"My Minecraft data pack shows up in the pack menu but does not do anything"
  1. If your Minecraft data pack is not working, there could be an issue with packs interfering with each other. Make sure to disable any other active packs, and type /reload in-game (if you have cheats enabled). In addition, you can try restarting Minecraft completely.
  2. Some data packs will only work with cheats enabled. Check with your pack's documentation to see if that's the case, and if it is, make sure to have cheats enabled when creating worlds.
  3. It is also possible that the pack you are trying to use is for the wrong version of Minecraft. Try using an older or newer Minecraft version than the one you are currently using to see if this is the issue.
