How to Breathe Underwater in Minecraft

There are four ways to breathe underwater in Minecraft, each varying in difficulty and duration:

• Water Breathing Potion
• Turtle Shells
• Respiration Enchantment on Helment
• Conduits

#1 Water Breathing Potion

One of the most straightforward ways to breathe underwater in Minecraft is with the water-breathing potion. These consumable potions will freeze your respiration bar, preventing you from getting damaged. The maximum duration for a water-breathing potion in Minecraft is 8 minutes, so you will have limited underwater time. However, these potions are relatively easy to make, which means you can stock many in your inventory to extend your stay underwater.

#2 Turtle Shells

Another way to breathe underwater in Minecraft is by wearing a turtle shell. Like drinking a water-breathing potion, you will receive the water-breathing effect when you dawn a turtle shell on your head. However, unlike consumable potions, a turtle shell will refill the water-breathing effect every time you are at the surface for as long as you are wearing the shell. For this reason, you do not need to craft multiple shells or potions.

The downside, however, is that shells only give you the water-breathing effect for 10 seconds. This means you will only have ten extra seconds underwater. While this will prevent you from doing anything extensive underwater, it is still helpful for tasks like treasure hunting, kelp farming, or quick exploration. 

To get a turtle shell in Minecraft, start by finding or breeding baby turtles. 

Once your baby turtles grow into adults, they will drop a scute. Collect five of these scutes, then place them in a crafting table to create a turtle shell, which you can wear like a helmet. 

#3 Respiration Enchantment on Helment

If you have easy access to an enchantment table in Minecraft, the respiration enchantment is a good way to breathe underwater. Like a turtle shell, any helmet worn on the head with this enchantment will extend your time underwater. However, unlike a turtle shell, the respiration enchantment does not give you the water-breathing effect; instead, it will slow down your oxygen bar’s decay. As a result, you will still need to resurface to avoid taking damage.

There are three respiration enchantments, the highest level giving you 1-minute underwater. As with most enchantments, you should be aware that using a helmet with respiration underwater will cause the durability to decrease. 

#4 Conduits

The best way to breathe underwater in Minecraft is with a conduit. This is because a conduit in Minecraft will allow you to remain underwater without depleting your oxygen bar as long as you stay within its effect radius. In addition, it will damage hostile mobs, give you night vision, and increase your mining speed underwater.

However, this power does come at a cost. Building a conduit can be time-consuming, as you will need at least one heart of the sea and eight nautilus shells.
