Potions are an essential part of Minecraft mechanics. You can either use them on yourself or use them on other people through splash potions or lingering potions. This Guide will show you how to get every single Minecraft potion there is in 1.20
Brewing Equipment
Before we get into brewing potions, you first need to know how to brew potions. For the brewing process, you will require a so-called brewing stand. You can craft one with three cobblestones and one blaze rod on a crafting table.
To fuel the brewing stand, you will require blaze powder and for the brewing process itself, you will require water bottles. You can craft bottles from glass and if you fill them from an infinite water source, you will not have to worry about that part.
Potion Ingredients and Modifiers
When it comes to brewing potions, there are a few base ingredients that you will require most of the time. These are:
Nether Warts
Nether Warts are required to make the vast majority of potions and can be found in nether fortresses. Make sure to bring some soul sand with you to have a steady supply of nether warts. You can then use nether warts to craft more complex potions.
Redstone Dust and Glowstone Dust
Redstone Dust and Glowstone Dust both improve potions. While Redstone Dust extends the duration of a potion, Glowstone Dust enhances the level of a potion.
If you have a speed potion and then apply Glowstone Dust to it, you would have a level 2 speed potion, which makes your character even faster. You can find redstone dust in caves and glowstone blocks in the nether, which, once broken, drop glowstone dust.
However, make sure to use the nether wart first, because else you would end up getting either a thick potion, or a mundane potion, which both do not have any use.
Fermented Spider Eye
Fermented Spider Eyes can be used to alter the potion effect by corrupting it. Using a fermented spider eye would change your speed potion into a slowness potion, for example.
Gunpowder and Dragon's Breath
And last but not least, Gunpowder and Dragon's Breath. Gunpowder can be used to change your potion into a splash potion, which you can then throw. Dragon's Breath changes the potion into a lingering potion, which means that the potion will linger over the floor, and if you step in it, you gain the effect.
Potion of Swiftness
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Sugar
You can brew this potion with one nether wart and one sugar. You can use a fermented spider eye to change it to a potion of slowness. As the name suggests, this potion gives you the speed effect and allows you to move faster.
Potion of Leaping
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Rabbit's Foot
The potion of leaping gives you the jump boost effect and can be brewed with one nether wart and a rabbit's foot. You can use a fermented spider eye to change it to a potion of slowness, just like the potion of swiftness.
Potion of Slowness
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Rabbit's Foot or Sugar, Fermented Spider Eye
As mentioned previously, you can use a fermented spider eye to either corrupt a potion of swiftness or a potion of leaping to get this potion. You can also use a Potion of Swiftness with a longer duration to get this potion or a potion of leaping with an extended duration.
Potion of Strength
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Blaze Powder
The fermented spider eye cannot be used to corrupt this potion effect. You can get a potion of strength with one nether wart and one blaze powder. It will then increase the damage that you inflict.
Potion of Healing
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Glistering Melon
This potion effect is very useful not only in combat but also when playing in your survival world. It instantly gives you two hearts or four hearts, if you have the level 2 potion of healing. Since there is no duration, you cannot use a redstone on this potion.
Potion of Poison
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Spider Eye
Poison gives you damage without actually killing you. You can brew it with one nether wart and a spider eye and increase the duration with a redstone and increase the damage dealt per second with glowstone dust.
Potion of Harming
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Glistering Melon or Spider Eye, Fermented Spider Eye
This potion is a corruption of either the potion of poison or the potion of healing. It instantly deals three hearts of damage or even six when upgraded to a level two potion with one glowstone.
Potion of Regeneration
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Ghast Tear
This potion effect allows you to regenerate without even being saturated enough. You cannot use a fermented spider eye on this potion.
Potion of Fire Resistance
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Magma Cream
The potion of fire resistance makes you immune to fire damage. This makes it incredibly useful when traveling in the nether or fighting someone with a sword with the fire aspect enchantment or a bow with the flame enchantment. You cannot use glowstone on this potion.
Potion of Water Breathing
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Pufferfish
Like with the potion of fire resistance, you cannot use glowstone on this potion. The Water Breathing effect allows you to breathe underwater for up to eight minutes when upgraded to the second level with redstone dust.
Potion of Night Vision
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Golden Carrot
This potion effect allows you to see clearly at night but also when in caves. If you are trying to find as many diamonds as possible, then this potion is definitely worth considering.
Potion of Invisibility
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Golden Carrot, Fermented Spider Eye
Unlike other corruptions, this potion effect is very useful and not negative. You can use it to make yourself invincible, though you should keep in mind that your armor still remains visible.
Potion of the Turtle Master
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Turtle Shell
This potion is both negative and positive. It gives you the slowness effect but also the resistance effect, which means that you will take less damage but also move slower.
Potion of Slow Falling
Ingredients: Nether Wart, Phantom Membrane
Ever wanted not to have to worry about falling off a cliff? Then this potion effect is definitely your go-to as it slows down the fall and thus results in you not taking any fall damage. You cannot use glowstone on this potion to make your fall even slower.
Potion of Weakness
Ingredients: Fermented Spider Eye
The potion of weakness is one of a kind as it is an advanced potion that does not require a nether wart but only a Fermented Eye of Spider.
