Minecraft Smite vs Sharpness

There has been a dilemma in Minecraft since the addition of item enchants to the game, players have been wondering which Minecraft enchantment is better for your sword, Minecraft Smite or Sharpness? In this guide, we will solve the long lasting dilemma about these enchantments.

What are Minecraft Enchantments?

To solve the dilemma we need to start at the beginning by explaining what enchantments are in Minecraft. Enchanting is one of many in-game mechanics that allow you to give special abilities to tools and armor. You will need an enchanting table in survival mode, but you can use the /enchant command if you are in creative mode with cheats enabled.

In Survival mode to enchant through the enchanting table, you will need to have enough levels and lapis lazuli. Once you place the item that you want to enchant (tool/armor/book) you can choose from three choices of enchantments, each requiring different amounts of levels and lapis lazuli.

To increase the levels and tiers of your enchanting table you will need to surround it with bookshelves. You will need 15 bookshelves to reach level 30 enchantments.



Enchantments can also be applied by using an anvil. To do it like this, you will need to have an enchanted book which you can get either by enchanting it yourself or finding it in a dungeon like a mineshaft, mob spawner, ancient city, or stronghold. Once you have your book, the tool you want to enchant, and an anvil you are all set.

You will need a certain amount of levels to combine your book and tool. Place them both in the anvil like shown in the picture below:

What does Smite do in Minecraft?

Minecraft Smite increases the damage you deal to undead mobs. This enchantment is great if you have a Zombie, Skeleton or mob farms like that. When fighting these types of mobs Smite is the better option. Also, when you decide to kill the Wither, Smite is drastically better than Sharpness, it takes almost double the amount of hits with Sharpness.

What does Sharpness do in Minecraft?

Minecraft Sharpness increases the overall melee damage. The maximum level of enchantment for Sharpness is five, each level of enchantment adds 0.5% more damage per hit. Sharpness is great for PvP, it is also good for all mobs because Minecraft Sharpness is not limited to one group like Smite and Bane of Arthropods.



Sharpness may not seem as effective as Smite as in some situations it takes up to 50% more hits to slain undead mobs. But it is overall the better enchantment because it is not specific for one group of mobs. Minecraft Sharpness is effective against all types of Minecraft entities. Smite is not effective against other players, the Ender Dragon and undead mobs unlike Sharpness.
