W-tap when you are starting a combo and when you start to go inside them.

i know to do it before hits and the basic how-to of it, but the timing is what i need to work on. should i do it at the start of a rod combo? i was watching dante's video where he showed his key combos when doing some build on Freelo, and he w-tapped at the beginning of a rod combo. i tried it, but it only worked sometimes…
