Radeon R9 290 is a solid graphics card. Just stick with the R9 290. You don't need to spend extra on the 290X. Also, I don't know exactly how much FPS it'd give you, but it would definitely be pretty good :)

Over 200? @iRattPack

It isn't just your video card. Minecraft isn't a graphic oriented game. You will need to have even parts so you don't lag and you get good framerates. I would recommend a lower graphics card as it is too overkill for Minecraft. However, if you decide to stick to the first one, and if you have other parts around the same capacity… you would get a nice 150 + FPS on high settings.

Depending on your settings, most likely. I recommend capping it at 120 though.

Minecraft is more CPU based then it is GPU based

So buy an Intel i7 instead? @Archybot

It depends what type of GPU you have. Because you have a crappy 8 year old one, then it's not going to work out. I would buy a Intel i5 and a less expensive GPU. It's all up to how your PC is built.

You shouldn't buy a PC for the intent of getting good FPS in minecraft.. Any i5 or i7 or any recent CPU will do you just fine… Plus, 1.8 has big plans of better optimization so that will just help you out even more.

Well I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, but it can't really get worse.

i5 is plenty of power for basic gaming, such as minecraft. i7 is mostly needed for stuff such as streaming, video rendering, etc. I use an ivy bridge i5 and I'm fine. If you don't have a budget then sure go i7, else go something like http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80637i53570k <- this is probably the best for money processor on the market in my honest opinion, but there are way better CPU's out there if you have 300+ to throw around (Don't ever buy an AMD CPU)

Here is a good list -

I disagree on not buying an AMD CPU as it is a solid CPU while on a budget. You can lock 120 FPS on Far, whilst only spending around $110-130 on an 8320 during a sale. Would Intel be more preferable if you play Minecraft? Yes, but if wanna spend less and Minecraft isn't as important for getting over +200 FPS, then AMD is the way to go for casual gaming.

Agreed, I have an 8350 in mine right now and for $200, it will eat anything you throw at it. For that price range, the Intel CPU's and AMD's are very comparable. Obviously Intel has higher tier processors, it's just the matter of if you're wanting to spend that type of money. Plus, with AMD's 6 or 8-core processors, it can help immensely when it comes to programs/games that take advantage of multiple cores (which seem to get more and more relevant).

Overall, if you have the money, buy an Intel. But if you're looking for more of a budget build, AMD's newer CPU's still take anything you throw at them.
