Mess around with it at first, try some ideas. Come up with particle effects

I suggest using a template (default textures, textures from other packs,etc) to make things easier. As @Walru said, mess around with it at first. That includes the color, shapes, and other tools. Really, just pay around with it and you'll get used to it.

Also be prepared to be hella creative. Edit it too.
