Try to predict what the player might do, if you think he will lava you, get ready your blocks and water.try to stay calm, dont go tryhard mode in the middle of that game as that does legit make it worser.
Gap at the first 1 or 2 mins.
Gap if you are under 5 hearts
Head if you are under 3 Hearts
Use your rod more often.
if the player is bow spamming, build a wall and wait for him to come around and while then get ready to lowkey eliminate him.
If you are trapped in lava, rod the player back ONCE ( this is hard to do because your panicing to water your self so may need to practice on this one)
Try jitter clicking, and if you do, dont jitter the right click button as i do that alot and seems to happen alot to others as ive been told.
If you lost too many times, chill out, and take a break, getting angry and pvping is going to make it harder for you
Wtapping is effective but must be used at the right momentum.
attack at an angle that the player wont predict. ( if hes going at the right side, go left. same with opposite.)
Use hot keys, ( side mouse buttons keyboard keys) this will help you instantly get to your hotbar slot and this helps garunteed
( for water i use F and G )
( For lava i use V)
Thats all, these tips bumped up my elo rank on s12 from 1300 to 1500 - 1600.

Do not rod when you are stuck in water that is a VERY bad idea it gives them a chance to gap and be more aggresive always put out the water first then rod you do have to have fast reflexes for it to be very effective however.
