Rocky's Introduce Yourself / AMA
Hello there!

My name is rockymma. I'm a long time Overcast regular (discovered Overcast back in the early summer days of 2012). I pretty much grew up on Overcast, and as a result I've got quite the reputation there, mostly for some of the many controversial things that I have said or done. I guess that's just the result of playing on the same server as your 12 year old self did four years ago, you build up a reputation that includes even some of your more cringeworthy moments.

I've always been very passionate about Overcast, it wasn't always the PvP that interested me but I was always captivated by the creativity of it and just the dynamic of it in comparison to what other servers offered. It's not very often you find a server that permits the usage of TNT (amongst other things), at the time I started playing there was truly nothing like it. I also really liked the community atmosphere and the collaborative aspect, there were always people who were excited to showcase their new cannon design, or their new defense and people who were interested in teaching others on these topics.

The direction the server I once called home has been heading towards in recent months (even recent years) has saddened me greatly, unfortunately due to many errors and failures it was eventually bought out by another company, whom sadly doesn't share the same vision that I still hold onto to this day. So here I am today, looking for other options. I'm fairly new to Badlion, I'm looking forward to meeting all of you!

With that said, feel free to ask me any questions should you have any.

Edit: I've also previously gone by the username Pugsley_, and TheOnlyPug (only for a short span of time).

Welcome Rocky!

Are you bringing Hive, PieZ, and htrap with you? This server needs more intense discussion…

(Serious question): What do you think needs to be done to improve Badlion from an outsider's standpoint?

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting PieZ or htrap yet, as for hive I don't know what his plans are, you would have to ask him.

It'd be unfair for me to take judgement since I'm so unfamiliar with Badlion and haven't made much of an effort to engage in any conversations here yet, but I would like to acknowledge one thing in particular that I noticed almost immediately, which is the forum UI. It's a bit old, not as user friendly as you'd like it to be and the font size when writing a post is incredibly small (I have to squint to read it).

Revive maple tree, part time dev for Badlion, or just play?

Thoughts on Badlion in general?

How would you rate your own pvp skill?

MapleTree was always a true passion project for myself, it was something I always felt really strongly about pursuing. One of the unfortunate facts that eventually led to me putting the project to rest, was just the simple truth that creating a network now is a lot harder to do than it was two or three years ago. The infrastructure required in order to bring your idea to life and create something people want to play is so much more expansive than it was in the past, it really requires a solid team of competent individuals (and a lot of funding) to be able to do right.

I think a perfect example of this is the incredibly large increase in more complex and sophisticated cheating clients over the years. Years ago you had very simple clients, stuff like Nodus and you could set up a PvP server with nothing more than NoCheatPlus (popular public anti cheat) and you'd be done. Nowadays, if you're a PvP server it's standard practice to implement your own Anti-Cheat (because current public solutions are no longer effective against these better clients), which is an incredibly expensive and time consuming task to do. It's something that is very hard to get right, but it's an absolute requirement for any PvP server who wants people to actually play on their servers. That is just one of many reasons why I ultimately ended up putting the project to rest, I may revive it but only if there was ever a time when I thought it'd be a worthwhile venture.

If the opportunity was presented to me to do work for Badlion, I'd certainly consider it but at the end of the day I'd need to make a decision that is in the best interest for my future.

I'm definitely looking forward to the release of CTF, as well as the release of some other Overcast styled game modes. Those sorts of developments do really excite me, so yes I do think I'll play. Probably no where near as much as I did in years past, but it's still something nonetheless that I'd be excited to play.

I think it's a lovely place to chill out and play Minecraft, like all businesses it has its own handful of issues (and/or problems) but, I must admit I was shocked to see all of the overwhelmingly positive and kind responses I got to this thread, that really did surprise me. Looking from the outside in there is usually a quite strong stereotype that Badlion is incredibly toxic (or just not a friendly environment in general). I haven't seen anything at this point and time to reinforce that stereotype, I'm hoping that is something Badlion can break over time as I know to some that is a major factor in whether or not they want to come here and play.

I'd rate myself around a 4 out of a scale of 1 to 10. It's just something I don't really excel at, and I'm completely fine with that. I'm mainly concerned about developing carpal tunnel, I had felt symptoms of something along those lines after doing a lot of melee work on Overcast, and this was about three months ago. Since then I've tried to eliminate that kind of activity completely, I've been feeling much better and haven't had any issues since.

Interestingly, I've been wondering if a server with a small community, good staff team, and basic autoclicker detection would work. Anything blatant gets caught by staff, basic autoclickers get caught by the anticheat, and anything spooky enough to fool both provides a small enough advantage that it wouldn't make a huge difference in gameplay. Then you have a handful of skilled screensharers to deal with the spooky cheaters who get high up on the leaderboard. It wouldn't be as ideal as GCheat, but I think it would do a damn good job compared to most servers these days.

Unfortunately, not only am I totally devoted to Badlion, a condition of being senior staff is that I can't staff for any other servers. Even if you did revive Maple Tree, my contribution would have to be very limited.

Badlion ingame toxicity is a different breed than forums toxicity. There are a few people that are widely disliked on forums, and a few forum feuds, but for the most part forums are very chill unless you say something people think is stupid.

I used Anti-Cheat development as an example to convey my point about the complexities of trying to create a network now versus a few years ago. Mainly because I felt it was most relevant in this community, I could also give some other good examples such as version support (1.7 die hards, etc) and of course dealing with legal stuff and people trying to take down your network through any means possible (DoS, DDoS, etc).

I'd like to note that I'm not a supporter of screen sharing, personally I find it pretty invasive (and sometimes very time consuming) and it just doesn't scale well at all. I like the concept of having a client-side solution like most popular e-sports titles have, but only if it was a transparent system and users could trust that the software is genuine and not doing anything other than its intended purpose.

I don't have any intentions in reviving it any time soon, even if I did I'd never engage in this "poaching" of staff behavior or anything like that. I'd never ask that of anyone who is holding a related position at another institution either voluntarily or as an employee. I know that wasn't what you were implying, but I just wanted to set the record straight just to clarify.

I understand, I can't speak much from an in-game sense since I'm not very acquainted with it. I'd assume that a lot of the in-game toxicity has to do with the competitive environment. I think a few months back I was looking at different ideas to try and reduce this, one of them was having a Bo3 (Winner of two out of three rounds wins) type of game mode. I'm sure someone has thought of this before, I wasn't sure if this was something Badlion had experimented with before or if it was even feasible.
