How is MMR better than elo?

Mhm. I think with the pure MMR only the BuildUHC ladder worked well as like MasterGberry said players dont want to wait too long for a 1-5 minute match.
And hasn't MMR a lot to do with the matchmaking?

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm an UHC Mod. So talking about Arena I know as much as a normal player.

matchmaking is the system that involves pairing up players and making matches, hence the name. mmr is the system that involves points, ranks, demotions, promotions, draining mechanics, etc. the matchmaking system was poor, therefore there was awful pairing. the actual existance of ranks and points, or mmr, does not affect the quality of matchmaking, otherwise it would STILL take long to get paired, but it doesnt. the previous matchmaking was bad, because it took forever to get paired, but the mmr system was good. everyone misjudged it because it was coincidentally paired with bad matchmaking. right now, the matchmaking is good, so we dont take forever to get paired, but the mmr is bad because there arent any of the cool features that were promised such as killstreaks affecting how many points you gain, and the starter matches giving you a proper rank.

OK ty. I always thought that MMR is directly linked to the matchmaking system as it means Matchmaking Rating. xD

The main problems with S13 MMR weren't within the system, they were really just 2 unrelated issues.

1. Paired with an awful matchmaking system, which was unrelated to the system and gave people a bad idea of MMR.
2. No one was ready for a drastic change and just expected a more Kohi styled version of S12.

A good system to have in place would be 10 placement matches that place you between Bronze III and Gold III, a 1/1000 bar, and the values of the old MMR system such as kill streaks and hacker forgiveness.

this was exactly the problem @Archybot it wasn't the MMR itself or any shit like that. We bitched about not being able to grind because the matchmaker literally physically barred us from grinding. Let's try the old MMR with the new matchmaker.

Since this is weirdly a calm and peaceful thread, I'm going to give my opinions on why I personally prefer ELO over MMR.

This isn't to start a war with anyone, as this system was coded amazingly, and in my opinion would work great with other gamemodes.

Personally I preferred ELO for a number of reasons.

When I first joined Badlion, it felt amazing for me to get from 1400 to 1500 in SG. It was an amazing experience which allowed me to continuously grind and become a better PVP'er. Eventually reaching 2000 ELO made me actually feel as if I had accomplished something amazing, beating better and worse players than me.

More attentive gameplay:

When playing against a low ELO player, I would naturally act more and more attentive towards how the player would play. Losing 27 ELO to a low level player, was something extremely annoying, but it allowed me to give my most in every match, and not get lazy over the gameplay. On the other hand with MMR, I can afford to lose a game, which makes me less careful and attentive to the game's pvp aspects (strafe/rodding/block hitting). This can be seen as both an advantage and disadvantage.

In my personal opinion what should have changed with Badlion's old ELO system, was the matchmaking system (which was eventually brought on with the buying of Kohi and change of rating system).

MAJOR DISCLAIMER: NOT STARTING TO CAUSE A WAR, BUT I WILL CHANGE MY OPINION IF VALID REASONS ARE SHOWN

I think that if Season 12, had been incorporated with this new system without the MMR change, it would have increased Badlion's player base so much more, while still keeping the community as large (feels sort of dead with this new Arena system)

No disrespect to Gberry or Archy, as this system was coded and made fucking efficiently, I just think that this much of a change wasn't the best idea.

all the reasons for you prefering elo are invalid because the current mmr system does exactly what elo does, and what i mean by that is that it does NOT give hacker forgiveness, or rewards for killstreaks. you havent experienced actual mmr yet. unless you want to include the mess that s13 was, which would most likely give a biased opinion since s13 was so bad
