Move the gapples out of your hand after eating to avoid double eating them.This glitch has been known in the game for years now, if it happens to you its really your own fault.

I'm pretty sure they fixed this in 1.10 but that is not the best version for pvp :/ and like FunkyFactions said just change to a different slot and it won't do it.
