ELO vs. MMR - Is the skill level the same?
So there have been two ranking systems: ELO and MMR. ImIced's near accurate conversion for build got pretty close to debunking the difference. But many wonder if their skill is the same? I'm Gold 1 in Build, made it to my rankup match before getting all the emeralds :/
But is the skill level really the same? I was 2108 build at the end of S12. I'm Gold 1 now. This does not necessarily mean I'm at the same place. But there's one definite thing:

ELO and MMR actually have very little to do with this thread. It's about the matchmaker.

The matchmaker actually gives you matches close to your own level making it harder to rank up and making it take more skill; the matchmaker back in season 12 could give you a 1400 if you were a 2100 but only give you 1 elo. This time, you can be what would be a 2100 and the matchmaker could give you what would be a 1700 but only give you maybe 30 something points. Obviously it can shove a Bronze 5 against a Master, but that would take ages. This matchmaker can essentially give you more points in less matches but a much larger risk of losing those points. So in other words, if this were like ELO everyone at Gold I would be at Emerald III, Gold II at Emerald IV, and so on. That's just my assumption, but I can kinda guess that people would be much higher if this matchmaker didn't match everyone on their skill level.

Hopefully this stops some of the talk on the forums saying "oh I was like 1900 in s12 and im gold 3 now did my skill level go down?!?!?!" and obviously the answer would be no, unless you stopped playing for a while and you're just rusty. If anything your skill level went up, you're playing better against people your own level.

Nobody can really base Elo to MMR converters from the stats of people in season 12, some people barely tried in season 12 and had low Elo, but came out with good MMR in season 14
Example:

That's what makes it really hard but it also can accurately show skill level using the method.

I guess he just improved, especially because he's played a lot in S14.
For me it's quite accurate. I usually had around 2300 in S12 and find myself struggling to keep Diamond V in S14. Converted it's quite about the same.

because there are already many philosophical posts such as this that are frankly more interesting to read
