You're right. It's in the order they apply. The faster you apply, the better your starting position is. To take the spot from the clan above you just challenge them on the forums, tag their leader, I will put their @'s behind the clans, and tag me.
(This is the most common format to challenge each other)
Clanname challenges Clanname for their spot.
You have 48 hours to respond.

The fights will be a 5v5 at least. Please look for more players, and contact me once you have them. You will keep your spot for another 48 hours. If you fail to gather more members by then, you will be removed.

Absolutely right. That's exactly how it works. If you want to challenge them, just use this format:
Dqrkness challenges Influence for their spot.
You have 48 hours to accept our challenge.
@MaximO_O @TheirLeader
(If they do not accept within 48 hours or deny the challenge you take their spot automatically).
