This is key really - if you don't hit your shots it makes it a lot harder to win (or at least be consistent). Practicing is really the only way to do this. If you're practicing to improve bowing on a horse, don't melee at all if you can help it. You can almost always avoid melee as long as you hit shots when they're advancing. Also, like any bow kit, don't forget to strafe. I find it easier to be unpredictable on a horse, and again this comes with practice (more so against good players if you can duel them or fight in ranked).
