I don't play FFA that much anymore, but this was brought up in the #ffa discord chat and it was something that happened to me in the past.When the FFA game starts going well for you, you usually have a dia sword and full iron - which is strong enough, no need to have full diamond when some people are full leather. But, it sucks that you may have 24+ diamonds and nothing to do with them. I feel like there should be a shop or even a command like /gold that converts/trades your diamonds for gold. This means that you could craft golden apples. I feel like it's a good balance and a good way for diamonds to not go to waste!
