How do you improve in SG
I started playing SG ladder in ranked a couple of days ago because I want to be better globally, but I get destroyed in melee, which is usually my strongest trait. In Build I'm half decent in the Gold IV to Gold II range depending on how hard I sweat, but in SG, Silvers destroy me. I've tried baiting out FnS and things like that. I was wondering how to use the items in my hotbar. For an example, if I get set on fire at high health, do I back off and bow then gap? Or continue to melee? I don't know, just little tips like that.

Help lol

I'm not really good at SG but playing defensive and doing rod+crit is the easiest way to play sg

See all of the strategies in SG mainly depend on your playstyle, for me, when i'm on fire at high health, I prefer to fall back and regen using rod spam and other methods to even the playing field, however, for a aggressive player a good idea may be to use the reduced KB that you get when on fire to bypass rods and get free hits and easier combos, that all depends on your playstyle.

A few of my tips:

When playing SG you need to find what you are good at and abuse it as much as possible, for example, I am good at 3 things only: Rod spam, bow & free hits. Being good with the rod and being reasonably constant gives me the edge in many matches, I am able to get myself in and out of many tight situations quickly and calmly by playing passive, this is a very good idea for any player to get a good grasp of, as it will help you majorly in the SG ladder. Bow, the bow is a major gamechanger in SG as about 6 fully pulled back shots can mostly kill somebody, and considering you have more than 6 arrows you can really flip the game with arrows alone without even needing to use a sword, so i'd certainly recommend playing short-range kits of bow to improve in that aspect, however the bow can be used for more than damage but also to regen, holding out the bow usually means your opponent will try to dodge the arrows, but if you just wait out time and keep it held back, then you can get a short amount of time to regen, however not long as the other player will eventually find out what you're upto. My third strength is free-hits, however this is not always going to work and is a risk, so only do it with enough practice otherwise it could quickly become a disadvantage, but if you are able to be unpredictable and jump up randomly, without rodding and land a free crit on someone that is a massive advantage especially on small maps, doing this throughout the game will keep your opponent on their toes continuously making them choke a lot.

But you need to find what play style suites you best and play at it.

Good luck!

So mostly SG is about spacing, and thinking out your opponent. And as far as I understand, you never play aggressive?

I think you just gotta play a lot to learn when to do things. Like most rod based pvp is pretty timing based but I really believe that SG is like 99% timing based. Just mainly focus on dodging + landing FNS's and shots and if you're able to do this you can become better without even meleeing. But to improve melee focus on rod tricking but learn when and when not to. Also you gotta learn to sense when your opponent has more or less health than you. If you get set on fire and don't know if you should tap or agro then think about how low your opponent is compared to you and also how easily you could melee them.

People think that I am shit at SG but I have actually beaten many emeralds on AU (I just find it really hard to get a higher rating since barely anyone plays anything apart from build in AU). I normally try to get the other person in an FnS at the start and then get a 2 or 3 hit combo on them. This gives you the advantage at the start, so you can kill your opponent rather quickly and if you don't kill them early in the fight, it puts them under pressure. That's how I play and just one more tip. Try to save your gapple for the end of the fight in long fights. Other than this, my only advice would be as @JuztChicken mentioned earlier. Find your strengths and abuse them.

Hope this helped and good luck on getting higher on the leaderboards in sg c:

Thanks so much @DCousins_II @GayBootyCheeks @Icehawk @JuztChicken !

I've gone up 3 divisions just by baiting out FnS and bow. I'm going for gold!
