Huge ping spikes resulting in losses

Ever since yesterday I've been experiencing ping spikes every ~30 seconds or so, and I don't know how to fix them. They ruin all my games as they always make me die because I can't see the screen for 10-20 seconds or I get timed out. Does anyone know how to fix this? This actually happend to me about 1 week ago. I basically resolved this by plugging in a Ethernet cable to my pc. I fixed the overall problem by resetting my modem, and my internet connection overall was way faster. Try that and tell me what happens.
