Why does this only work on Windows and not Mac/Linux?
The simple answer is the anti-cheat is only programmed for Windows at the moment. The long answer is a lot of the system API's for Windows and Mac/Linux are very different. It is not a simple matter to port the anticheat code from Windows to Mac/Linux. Less than 10% of Badlion's population plays on operating systems other than Windows. This being said it is something we are actively researching the possibility of for a later date but we are making no promises as to whether we will ever be able to port the anticheat over or not. We recommend users who have a Mac use Bootcamp to install Windows on their machine. It is a completely free tool provided by Apple to dual boot your computer with both Mac and Windows. You need a valid Windows license key though. More info can be found here.

Ok, thank you for the answer.
Could you also provide an answer for the 2nd part of my original post: "This brings me to my second point: "It's a very common practice in esports to put aside slots for specially designated teams." It looks like this could be extremely biased. Can you give an example for where this is done in e-sports? The really competetive and official tourneys only have teams in them who qualified for them and they don't give free spots to teams just because they had bad luck in the qualifiers"

Still planned. At the moment we are waiting for some Season 15 stuff to be sorted before we tackle this tournament.

First link is about a new league where 7/8 teams were invited. Probably because none of these teams would have participated in a qualifier for a unknown league in it's first year. It doesn't really speak for the competitiveness of the league.
Maybe I overread it but the second link is mainly about that SK Gaming is already qualified because it is mathematically impossible to not make the qualification cut off.
The third link is really interesting. I didn't know that Dota does these direct invites but it also seems like they are breaking the direct invites down. In 2015 they had 10direct invites, now they "only" have 6.
I understand if you want to be able to invite teams. Through the invites you can hold the favourite teams of the viewers in the tournament so the finale tournament of the Diamond Series will get guaranteed a lot attention but personally I don't like it. It doesn't really speak for the competitiveness of the league.
