NA CTW 5v5 - September 30th - October 8th - Review
Congratulations to MCUnbreakable, Zaquez, Twisz, bjr201111, Vijf, Kiloh, Corporal, Tonage, and Heirokos of Team Aura for taking home first place in our $1000 5v5 CTW tournament!

Diamond Series Invitationals:

Congratulations to Team Aura and Team YAGA for who join Rome and PureBlox as the second pair of teams to secure spots in the Badlion Diamond Series Invitationals! For our Domination tournament, these four teams will still be allowed to compete for money, however they will not be able to "fill up" another Diamond Series spot - the top 2 teams who haven't already qualified (and who have no already-qualified players on their roster) will be selected. Read here for more details on this policy. Keep in mind that the results in these tournaments can and will likely be used to seed the invitationals, and that we are watching closely to see who should fill the 2 extra reserved slots we've set aside to fill with teams who we believe deserve a chance to compete at the top level.

In the case where at least 3 of the top 4 teams in the Domination tournament have already qualified, we may run into the scenario where our standard formats won't be able to select a winner (i.e. a 4-way or 2-way tie for 5th). If this occurs, we will make sure to play some sort of 5th place match(es) to determine who most deserves to pass into the invitationals.

Badlion Client Crashes & Addressing the Delay

I addressed Badlion Client problems and how we hope to improve our "exemption system" in the future in the previous review, however since it was an issue in this tournament, I feel like it's something we should address.

We are very sorry about how much match scheduling was shifted around during this tournament. Ultimately, we want to run the fairest and most competitive tournament that we can, and we must take all factors into consideration. On the first Saturday of the tournament, a match result was challenged due to Badlion Client crashes. After careful review and confirmation from Archy that the crashes were BLC-related, we made the decision to replay the match. We had never formally decided whether BLC issues should be considered the responsibility of Badlion or the player, and because there was no policy in place, we erred on the side of caution and replayed the match. This threw our schedule off, and we apologize for that.

Our policy in the future is that teams and players are responsible for Badlion Client issues. If you crash mid-match, you should have subs prepared. If you have problems with Badlion Client, we have a system in place to get exempted from the requirement, and it's your responsibility to test it out ahead of time and figure out if you have any issues running it. We do not want matches to be delayed for preventable, individual problems, and from the time of this post onwards, this will be our policy.

Format

This was our first time running a 2 day tournament (granted, it ended up going into the next weekend for 2 teams) since May, and we want to know how you guys felt about it. Do you think allowing for a second day was beneficial to the tournament? Were the additional matches we were able to run worth the extra time commitment?

We will be trying out a group stage format in our SA NoDebuff tournament this weekend, and if it goes well we hope to implement it in the Domination tournament. What this would mean for Domination is that on Saturday, the teams play some sort of non-elimination rounds (so every team plays the same number of games), and at the end of the first stage, we advance the teams with the best records to the second bracket stage. This could be any number of teams, single or double elimination. We’re curious what you guys want to see: round robin or swiss? Single or double elim? How many teams move on?

Domination is a flexible gamemode in that the games are guaranteed to last no longer than a predetermined time, and there is no risk of 1+ hour games holding up the bracket. This makes it a good gamemode to potentially try out a more interesting format.

Other Things of Note

There are a lot of other small things I wanted to mention, but instead of writing a 10k word monstrosity, I figured I’d just include little blurbs here.

We had issues with a couple of the maps lasting a very long time in CTW. The verdict is out on how to solve this, but some ideas that have been discussed are changing armor supply to be either much smaller or much larger, finding some way to create a hard time limit in CTW, and punishing teams who purposefully stalemate. If you guys have any thoughts or suggestions on this issue, leave a reply about it.

The seeding for this tournament was done by a committee of ~20 dedicated and involved community members. Everyone submitted their own ranking of the teams and then, after reviewing the submissions, I averaged them together to create the bracket seeding. This seems better than hand seeding myself or trying to rely on Elo or some other metric. I think it was successful given that the top 6 teams were the top 6 seeds, although I have heard criticism of this method. Do you guys think this is a reliable method and one that I should use again for Domination?

Finally, we experienced a few delays this tourney that were due to unfortunate network problems. We’re sorry about this, and sorry about how long a lot of you spent waiting. We always aim for the policy of never keeping teams waiting for longer than an hour, and we were on the verge of postponing on Saturday right before the issues were fixed. Thanks to the devs who spent their weekends keeping the server up, and thanks again to the teams who were patient as we tried to work around these issues.

gg, thank you for hosting.

I liked the 2 day format, theres people playing from all around the globe and if we kept a tournament going for 7 hours it wouldn't work for half the people. Without the delays and errors I think a 2 day tournament like this is great.

Good tournament, grats to all the winners!

I would say that the BLC policy isn't 100% fair. Although I don't think it happened in this tournament, there are some times that a player gets disconnected for "BAC Authentication Error" or "BAC Error -9" which is seemingly random and not preventable.

If problems like this are fixed, then I think the policy will be fair.

Honestly i think a 2 days event is great idea, but I didn't agree about adding it for this tournament, after in the main announcement thread there was only one date. You can't change everything, we do other things and we organize to play the tourney and that, ruins us.

I'd prefer use the same format for all qualifiers tournaments to diamond series invis, but anyway if i have to choose one, I'd take round robin and double elimination. If there are more than 80 teams top3-4 move on if not top2-3, and depends on how many groups you have.
^^^^^^^ talking about Domination

swiss for SA tourney sound interesting.

I think you need to keep the committee and check who still playing in badlion tournaments, and maybe take 5-10 more.

Well after those questions i want to give my feedback/opinion in some things.

-Make sure all of your refs understand the veto system, i'm focused in the tourney and focused with my team, i don't want to waste my time explaining them how it works.

-Don't change important things during the event, you changed a few rounds from bo3 to bo1 due the lack of time, because you end the event so early the saturday there were matches scheduled to play that day and you just don't play them (wrong decision). Also i understand, repeat I UNDERSTAND, when you moved those matches to sunday you need start the event early, but when you set the hour, you didn't respect the time of the main thread neither the one in the challonge, and i repeat once again I UNDERSTAND your point, but when you guys contacted me to play against pb earlier than the agreed time you don't respect me and you wanted to rush the match and that made me so salty cause you don't even try to apologize. (That day, this review is different.)

-Another thing a I found so annoying is about the map team/tournament team spectating the scrimmages, personally i think it should not be allowed for those players who can spec private matches to play the tournament. I hope no one took an advantage from this but that is something we will never know so i hope you fix this, or make rules about this into the staff team.

Also if there is any chance to have the blc for 1.8 for domination tourney (one week before) I would appreciate it. And thanks for hosting this tourney :)
