Improving Oldschool
Hello everyone. When I have played and hosted Oldschool UHCs I have noticed some things that need improving. In this post I will state what I think could be improved and how.


Diamonds
First off I will start off with the most obvious, diamonds. If you have played a Oldschool UHC you will know that diamonds are incredibly hard to find and almost everyone is full iron. While I think having few diamonds is great due to multiple reasons, making bow useful, encouraging tactical playing and basically disabling chugging there is one problem. There is already a gamemode that does this, diamondless.

Solution
My solution is increasing the chance that diamonds will spawn in caves and not have fully vanilla generation. But the hard thing to balance is how much is too much. What I think Oldschool should give is half diamond enchanted as that is how I remember UHC from back in the day. Of course half diamond is only the average, some people would have full diamond and other only full iron.

Consequences
This will bring the same benefits as everyone having full iron but in my opinion make it even better. All the great things I stated about full iron will stay but it will also make fights last longer. This is good because if you've ever mined for an hour to then die in under a minute you know how that feels. It makes you want to quit and wonder why you wasted all that time which is never good.
It will not only do that but also make caving feel a lot less stale and more exciting then if you find no diamonds. A good thing with finding less diamonds than normal is making you feel excited and happy when you finally see that shiny ore. As I said finding too few diamonds is not great as well as finding too many.
Having this kind of armor would allow maybe around top 100-50 to have full diamond with good enchants and lots of gapples. But it would not come from mining, which requires little actual skill. It would come from getting kills, which requires good pvping and good tactics. This would also solve another problem with the current normal UHCs. That the people with the most kills are almost never the winners. With my improved Oldschool gamemode the people with the most kills would have the best gear making it more likely for them to win.

Is it possible?
Yes it would be possible as there is not much new code that would have to be written, (at least I don't think so as diamonds spawning in caves is a part of the badlions world generation). Although it would require a lot of testing and trial and error to pinpoint that sweet spot. If it succeeds though I believe that Oldschool could become very popular as it is kind of the best of both worlds, again in my opinion.

Note: There is a bug with seeing ores but even if that get's fixed everything I have said would still apply.

I am neutral on this idea.

From what I have heard, Oldschool is very similar if not exact diamond rates and caves as 5.0 (Vanilla) and I think Oldschool is unique therefore it is meant to be very different from 6.0. I don't think anything needs to be changed I just think people are too used to the full diamond by 20 mins every game and are forgetting about 5.0.

This is just my opinion though, interesting idea.

I believe Oldschool is exactly like vanilla actually. And that's the problem in my opinion. My idea would still greatly differentiate it from 6.0 but make it a little more exciting than being almost exactly like a MiniUHC. I totally agree though with that people are too used to getting full diamond by 20 minutes. My idea is that people will have about half diamond after at least 45 minutes of mining. I understand where you are coming from but do not totally agree with you. :)

Fair point I guess. Although, I think Badlion has already slightly made it easier as strip-mining is now allowed. I went to the border at 35 (rush game) and my teammate and I were half diamond each and so were the other teams there. I am not sure if I just got lucky or you were unlucky but to me ATM it seems fine :/

Interesting. When I hosted today there were almost only full irons. Also without stripmining finding diamonds would be almost impossible.

Old school gamemodes have a bug currently with ores spawning, diamonds will be easier to find when the bug is fixed.

Yeah I even said that in the post. But as I said I still think it would be better with my idea, but maybe you don't.

I've only ever found diamond when I stripmine to them or punch a block which I believe is a glitch.

THE ANTI XRAY IS BROKEN that's the reason for this, Gonzaloo said this in UHC Elite and it was not broken the first three games and everyone had one piece to three quarters at first border some were even full. I know you said this in the post but the whole point of old school is people liked the 5.0 and that's why they wanted it back, because most people like that hate high ores much like myself it takes almost no skill to win if everyone is full dia and it's annoying how fights end up lasting 1 or 2 minutes.

Just to this tho, as of now old school is still broken I'm pretty sure and that's why you saw this. From my experience everyone was full dia at 3rd border if they had kills in the old school games I played that were not broken.

From what I've been hearing when it worked it was kind of the thing I wanted so maybe nothing needs to be changed. Oh well. \_[**]_/
