when i try to launch 1.8.9 it says there's an error updating jar but can run any other version.

Hello,

Try disabling your antivirus and firewall (and VPN if you are using one) and see if it fixes the issue.
If it doesn't fix the issue, click on "Submit Bug Report" at the bottom of the launcher. It will send us your logs and the tech support team will look into the issue.
