As of the Badlion 2.15 update, which introduced Optifine L5 to 1.8, there has been a strange bug with certain blocks.
I play on Hypixel Skyblock, which has items with custom NBT data that can be used for certain things. As far as I have seen, variants of a custom dropper item called a compactor, a sponge block used to clear out large bodies of water, a furnace called an auto smelter, and a command block called a minion expander all show up as null blocks. This didn't happen at all before the 2.15 update, and Optifine is usually to blame for visual bugs of this caliber, which is why I attributed this bug to it. Below are images of the null blocks with the tooltip in the description (I think it's called a tooltip, you know, the thing that says "minecraft:block_name", yeah, that one).

EDIT: I will note that this bug only occurs when I have a texture pack on. When the textures are the default for these blocks, they don't show up as null with custom data. Also, I did check that the textures work with the regular blocks with my texture pack on.
