I've been looking into this issue a little bit and what I've found is that chat works just fine on 1.8.9 but when I switch to a newer version it starts having this issue.
So far I know that turning on new chat fixes the issue, but I really dislike new chat so I'd like to work towards a fix that allows me to use old chat in 1.16.
