Yes, because it cuts forum spam and useless postsPosted on 04 April 2015 - 05:13 AM
please no rating system of any kind-it promotes circlejerking
-it causes people to judge the quality of a post before reading it
-it excludes new members from the discussion because people are more likely to vote in a biased fashion

And when people up/down vote a post it means they won't post any reasoning eitherPosted on 04 April 2015 - 06:55 PM
Regardless they can also post their opinion and I'm pretty sure bad lion is the last place people will leave their opinions based on othersPosted on 04 April 2015 - 09:30 PM

Not really, it's as much of a circlejerk as posting +1 in a thread.
iSluff wrote
That's already a thing with +1 spam on forums.

I kind of agree, but honestly, it's the sign of a bad community if lesser known players / players with a bad rep are not getting +1s for a good post.

And this already happens by posting +1 on a thread (already happening in this thread)

I completely agree.
This would just bring a sense of peer pressure to the forums.

What is a forum meant for? It's meant for discussion on particular topics. Cut out the jokey side of the forum and it's meant for meaningful discussion on meaningful topics. Let's take, for example, the Ideas and Suggestions forum. It's a serious forum where important topics are brought up. In this forum, I'd expect the ideal is a forum where all posts contribute to the thread positively — a) by bringing up something new b) by potentially improving someone else's post c) bringing up something related to the thread without going off-topic d) really any meaningful stuff I've missed. Now, I hate to call out certain people, but:

Right here are two examples of absolutely meaningless posts. No solid contribution, nothing added to provide proper support/opposition to the idea. All we get from here is two people like the idea. Nothing else. This is why forums add +1 buttons — to eliminate these types of posts.
A real contribution would be something of the following (not saying any of these are good or bad ideas):
"I agree. However, friends of players would brigade the +1 button. To prevent this, I suggest that the +1 button does not contribute to some numerical reputation system and that the number of points is only used to judge how many players agree with the idea, not a final decision."
"I disagree because the brigading is too much of a problem, and it's best not to implement such a thing."
Adding a +1 button should make +1 posts without anything else disallowed, and it's really going to cut down on useless forum spam. Perhaps only make it a thing in certain sub forums? "Bugs and Broken Features" and "Ideas and Suggestions" should probably be the only forums to make it allowed in.

The introduction of an official voting system for for posts/threads would also introduce a popularity system. This would essentially create some posts that are ignored by all, and some that are reviewed by all. While this is a good method of preventing attention to spam, it would also promote an idea. The more popular the idea gets, the more votes it will get, making that thread a priority over other threads.
I'm sure we can both agree, Pal, the popular idea isn't always the 'correct' idea. While the popularity system may ward off some blights of the community, it comes with its own blights, too. It is much for effective and respectable to post reasoning in your comments, and not to hop on the bandwagon of another popular idea.

thanks kaezima this is pretty much just a way to get people's opinions across, not make decisions for badlionPosted on 05 April 2015 - 12:22 AM

An official voting system wouldn't really be that bad, as long as there is nothing you can gain from it. All that's needed is a +1 button, and nothing else. Aside from getting votes, there's absolutely no benefit. Brigading something isn't going to help the fact that an idea is bad. All of the votes are going to be meaningless if someone points out something bad about the post; a well-written reply that opposes a very popular idea and brings up good points should be enough to veto whatever's said by the OP. Votes shouldn't be a sign to show how good an idea is, it should be used to get an idea of what the community wants. If whatever part of the community's voting for the post doesn't have a good argument to back them up, it's not going to matter.
And besides, this kind of thing is already in effect: https://www.badlion.net/forum/thread/8958
Would you rather have that spam of +1s or a counter below the post showing the amount of +1s?
Varicks wrote
I agree, but I think it's more beneficial to have one compared to not having one. These votes matter just as much as +1 posts do as they are now.

If there is no benefit, then why implement it at all?

But at the same time, voids other posts. That defeats the entire purpose of a forum, and would be better suited for a gallery theme.

How does it void others' ideas? I don't really think existing +1 posts discourage others' posts and void their ideas.
But let's say you're right. Some guy's idea gets really popular, and a guy posts against it. While he has a meaningful opposition that should be noted, it isn't noted. The solution to this is to make a thread that points out everything wrong with the popular idea presented earlier. But it shouldn't be necessary for someone to make a new thread to counter someone's idea—this is a sign that the +1 system isn't working. I'd gladly be against the idea if it turned out like this, but so many other forums have the system working completely fine. If the reality was like that, I wouldn't be so supportive of the idea.

Thing is, if people read a post with a lot of upvotes/+1s then they are more likely to simply agree just because they don't want to stand out.
