+1

Thing is, if people read a post with a lot of upvotes/+1s then they are more likely to simply agree just because they don't want to stand out.

I have an opinion about something, so I'll post my opinion on it.
If you're scared to post, I'd assume you're probably okay with that idea being implemented.

How does it void others' ideas? I don't really think existing +1 posts discourage others' posts and void their ideas.
But let's say you're right. Some guy's idea gets really popular, and a guy posts against it. While he has a meaningful opposition that should be noted, it isn't noted. The solution to this is to make a thread that points out everything wrong with the popular idea presented earlier. But it shouldn't be necessary for someone to make a new thread to counter someone's idea—this is a sign that the +1 system isn't working. I'd gladly be against the idea if it turned out like this, but so many other forums have the system working completely fine. If the reality was like that, I wouldn't be so supportive of the idea.

The system would void other ideas through the means of unpopular or unwanted post, or spam. This reputation system would essentially differentiate what the majority of a group wants you to see from what they don't want you to see.

I understand where you're coming from, but you're describing it's impact from a perspective that is flawless. There is absolutely no chance that the system would not be abused, and instead would end up abused as we have all seen on other websites time and time again. If the system were to not be abused, then it would be proper. But, it's just too vague of a system to be nearly as effective as you want it to be.

It's definitely going to be abused, but where we both are really disagreeing at is the extent of that abuse. I think it's something that could work, but you think that the community will abuse it and kill potential ideas.

honestly theres no difference between +1 button and someone posting the word +1, just a matter of convienience in my eyes

The major difference is the fact that an Upvote button is anonymous. That is the biggest problem, imo.

And how is that a problem?

Then don't make jt anonymous…Let there be an option to see who liked/disliked it.

Compromise is a beautiful thing.

I'm just curious
What pros/cons do you guys see in anonymous votes / public votes?

See, if a well known player Like a mod says +1 others will follow which is why it should be anonymous

I like the idea of a +1 button. Just don't have a -1 button. I think a perfect way to have it would be like "Sprint, kaezima7, and Varicks +1ed this post along with 47 other people"
and then you can click the 47 other people and see a list of everyone who has +1ed it. So this would generally be used to +1 feedback/suggestions, and if alts were used it would definitely be detected. So +1 to the idea, I would click the +1 button, but we don't have it, so I gotta type this post instead :P

Here, let's compromise.

1) Upvotes and downvotes are both counted
2) Posts are still sorted by most recent
3) Just have the counter on the right side of the topic
4) No anonymity, mean what you say.
5) Any racist or offensive post will result in a temp forum ban for all who +1ed it.

Just so you can see, on average, what people think of the topic

Definitely not. Reddit is a wonderful example of why this should never be implemented.

For the racist thing, okay. For the offensive thing, no. Different people take offense to different things.
