I would suggest a vanilla tourny, even though there already has been one, it was a while back, and we have many new players from that time, and vanilla is much different from 1.6, with the new toggle sprint addition. Its a ranked ladder, with vanilla kit (anything allowed except extra armor) where you PvP competitively to get the highest elo. Unless you are a donator, which gives you unlimited matches, you would only get 10 matches a day, plus an extra 10 if you vote.
Here is a graph of elo levels based on skill in my opinion
1200-1100- pretty bad at pvp, usually people who have 10fps computers, or have never pvp'd before
1300- Not really good but not horrible, usually off of a factions server with not very many skilled players
1400- Average
1500s- Decent
1600s- Ok at pvp, getting better
1700s- Good pvper
1800s- Really good pvper
1900s- Amazing at pvp
2000s- Godlike at pvp
