Fast-thinking is the key. Also, debuffs are essential.

Fast thinking and knowing when to pot and debuff. Vanilla is more about potions than melee tbh, that's why vanilla FFA is a potion not a sword like kohi.

Interesting.. thank you ;) I'll try to practice more

Also, how many debuffs should I bring?

Depends of your playstyle. I just use 1 set+1 weakness extra. Im based on that. Btw i don't use regen2
Just test some combinations, and find the best one that suits for you

Crit loads. it's 3 hearts per crit on average, with poison2 and they are gone quickly.

Run when you're get into a combo, and end combos early to avoid being rebuffed
Try to get as many crits as possible without getting into their combo
If you're losing overall, try to play aggressively and get a surprise win

It's a debuff game, too:
Carry poison 2s to hit the opponent along with a regen 2, or alternatively use it to get rid of your poison 1
You can use regen 2 towards the end of your regen 1 buff to tank (if you never got a chance to rebuff your opponent with it)
Have three sets of buffs
Pot when you're at 5 hearts or less, since you have regen to help you
Time your debuffs to give them the smallest advantage
If you know that the player doesn't have a third set of buffs, try to avoid close combat and kill them when you've rebuffed the third time

Take it from someone who used to be 2.1k
When you're being comboed debuff them. There's nothing they can do to dodge those. NEVER agro pearl unless they're repotting/rebuffing. If you agro pearl, they could just throw debuffs right where pearl lands. Pay attention to helm dura. Once it gets down, start block hitting. (block hitting's gay but still). Avoid critting, you'll get knocked into the air. If you're getting comboed, pearl to them, pearl away, or turn around and just run and pot. Dodge debuffs. If they're combing you and it ends, that's a common time to debuff, so run towards them, then jump and turn around. Do stuff like that at common debuff time's. Hot bar setup means alot. Keep sword on 1, steak on 8, pearls on 9. 8 and 9 are hardest to hotkey, so steak on 8, and pearls on 9 where you can easily scroll on place to.
Hope that helped ;)!

even though it seems obvious: don't die. just the act of staying alive, even if you're wasting pots to do it, increases your chances in vanilla. unlike kohi, where fights are almost always decided by who runs out of pots, in vanilla lots of fights end early with a surprise combo or a late pot. just stay alive and you'll win a few extra fights with a cheese like critting someone out or something. Also inventory management. be good at ALWAYS keeping your hotbar full of pots.

Also, I see people use splash pots to buff up. Is that a good idea? I'm used to drinking potions, but I havent tried using splash pots to buff

I used to splash, but it's not really worth it. Just use your drinkables; the length of splash potions are too short and can be used to the opponent's advantage (they can see you splashing)

There's only 1 tip for vanilla.

kb, like seriously. People already panic enough in vanilla because of the amount of damage, and you with your kb swords throwing them off their pots, they're already done. Just look it up, I have 2200 with a kb1 sword, it really wasn't hard. The only people I die to, is people using kb2.

2410 in vanilla

What u gotta do is combo them really hard and land ur debuffs and if u are good at comboing then u will be good in vanilla. If you are good at kohi then idk why u wouldn't be good at vanilla it's just more damage y0
