it's a pvp tactic invented by varicksbasically, you fight, then you run, then you start blocking
then you wait for them to start blocking and pretend to be friendly
after there's an atmosphere of comfort and trust lingering in the air, you backstab them and kill them
but as the tactic became mainstream, people stopped trying and do it like you described
