Encouraging Suicide is illegal?
I was watching a video about Top 10 internet crimes and I saw one man was arrested for helping teens kill themselves…

I looked into this and found that it is illegal in many states of the U.S and other countries it's illegal to encourage/assist someone to killthemselves.

If it's a crime in the U.S… why are people in badlion getting muted for 7 days, when it's technically a criminal offense depending where you live. I know @Tredawg2002 had a thread about something similar, it just confuses me. if a staff member finds this unnecessary or breaking rules please lock/delete the thread, i'm just curious.

Don't think it's illegal as such as it isn't assisting, but it's a truely horrible form of communicating with people. It's the lowest thing you can say to another person and it can be one snide comment that makes someone flip. It should be illegal, but morals don't really count with law.

I've seen quite a few "criminals" online. I agree, telling someone to go die or kill themselves is a horrible thing to do. I understand kids can be stupid and spit out kys w/o thinking about it, but I have some ways to control my temper. I would probably have 300 mutes if it weren't for singleplayer, xD

O_o Well, personally here's how I look at bringing people down:

Every word counts, anything you say, matters, it is NEVER forgotten. The words and memories you embed into someone's brain last as a rippling effect that extends, well, for forever essentially. You can't forget it, you can't let go of those memories, and they, each of them, have a huge impact on a person's life.

Words are words, they are useless if not used.

They can destroy everything you know.

Or they can show you something beautiful.

All depends on how you use them.

Use them wisely.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to tell someone to "kill themselves" on it's own but most things that normally go along with that is illegal and is considered harassment and cyber-bullying.

Mutes and bans are dependent on how severe they are. Kill yourself can be interpreted as an ingame idea for the player to not continue living in game. KYS, gives same idea. Go drink bleach Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! would constitute a ban

I've said in the past that this should be a minimum perm mute and possibly a perm ban. Most mods I've spoken to seem to agree but the rule doesn't change.

Telling others to kill themselves is not illegal itself, it's only when you're involved in its assistance where it can become something to charge

Ah, okay. It just confused me so much. Thanks for all the responses.

Still, they all relate to the same general idea of telling another human being to end their life. It's an awful thing to say and should have the same punishment regardless of how they say it. One will not learn their lesson if they attempt to make a joke and do not intend to say "kill yourself" and it's taken the wrong way. That person needs to be punished for it no matter how it is portrayed.

I used to always ban for it, until recently "Death Threats" were added to our mute reasons. Since then I've been muting for a week unless it is over the top. Then I will ban.

Hmm, one part of my mind wants a perm ban, and one part doesn't…

In many places, the simple act of telling one to kill himself is considering assisting suicide in court.

I think it's only considered a crime if the person who was encouraged to commit suicide actually does.

it doesn't take away from how horrible the 2 words are, kill yourself may not result in a suicide but it's still is a terrible terrible thing to say
