Question about Apples [New Player]

Hi everyone,I have a quick question about the strategy regarding apples, which I cannot find an answer to anywhere.
Why do people leave the bottom block of a tree when farming for apples at the beginning of the game?

I think it's just faster, it doesn't have an effect on Apple rates though. Personally I'd prefer to get all the wood just because more is better :/Posted on 08 November 2015 - 01:36 PM
Because it doesn't effect the leaves, and if you're gonna cut down a lot of trees you won't really need those extra pieces.Posted on 08 November 2015 - 01:42 PM

I do it to save time and it also helps me remember that I chopped down a tree right there and that I should check for apples.
