2. I bowspam the hell out of them
3. If they get close, I either lava them [Treat it like an FNS], or go straight for the sword [Circle strafing works extremely well against kids who rely on the rod+straightline type of pvp]. I don't rod people unless
- they are running from me
- They just jumped off of a block.
4. If they keep running I bow them down, otherwise I back off, regen, and repeat.

I am not going to tell you to "strafe" and shit, I'm going to tell you some actual helpful rules you should abide by in battle- Never pre-gap/head, you are just giving yourself a disadvantage.
- Never heal if you haven't lost your absorption hearts NO MATTER WHAT, you will have at least 2.5 hearts if you still have your absorption hearts, and if you lose your absorption hearts, the player will still have to bow you either 2-3 times to kill you, which will give you time to heal again.
My tactic (which is very effective):
- Run around in circles rod spamming the fuck out of them and blocking all arrows so the arrows will do less that 0.5 most of the time. Once they have used a lot of their arrows, quickly turn on them and beat their ass with a 20 hit combo and call it a day. (I am one of the best rod spammers so it is a hard technique to get used to).

My playing style usually makes the player think different things. I want them to think I'm going to do something, but then do something completely different.1.) Start off with the bow, but slowly get closer to melee rush. I do this because I'm absolute trash with the bow. I like people to think I'm engaging in a bow battle, and then melee rush them. Unless you're fighting @Salvo_ , I've found this to work.
2.) A&S strafes. Even if you have bad ping, this will work. Get your opponent into a circle strafe, and then rapidly press A&S over and over again. You basically get out of their hit box just enough each time, therefore creating a straight line (I get 85-90ms). I ONLY do this in ranked or clan battles. I will never do this in a normal duel, because if executed correctly it is super over powered.
3.) Lava walls. If your opponent is in a corner of on a wall, lava the block their head is on. they'll get stuck and swim for days. (Back up and rod them into it too).
4.) Finishing the fight. Another thing I only do in ranked or clan battles, but if you get a good combo or more hits and they want to heal, keep going. Don't stop until you're about 3-4 hearts, then be more cautious unless you know you can finish it. This is normally what people with lower ELO will do, and it always kills me.

My personal build strategy depends on their elo.If they're a higher elo than me or 1900+, I'll bow at the start to give me an indication of whether I could out drain them this way. After a bit I'll then pregap or head depending on health, then rush and melee them to see if they're better than me at that. 2k's usually are, so I try to limit melee to a couple of hits per exchange (use lava), then let myself get knocked back and bowspam some more. Most of the time I can outplay people with the bow so this is how I win high elo fights. If I bow them low and I know I'm on much higher health, I'll rush and go in for the kill.
Be patient, a lot of the time they'll block up and wait for the rush. Don't rush.

For any other players I just pregap and go in for melee. I can't be bothered to tryhard when it's likely I can just kill them with melee.
