Its not a myth, back when-for some reason, I played on 1.8 I had The Better Sprinting Mod downloaded, it did in-fact change my knockback to the point of being banned for it. This is not the case for toggle sneak or whatever the other one's name is. I actually helps, tbh for those who are used to it. Though after some time, holding in left ctrl or shift with your pinky or something isn't that hard to do, along with being able to physically tape it.
