Not a huge deal.. But...
Just wanted a place to discuss with other players/staff members about how the chat works, and why it works that way. Today I noticed (in the soup server) that someone was muted for calling another player a "noob". I see this practically everyday, and the people saying those things are never muted. Probably because staff wasn't online at that time to handle the situation, or were busy in the middle of a 1v1, or whatever, but my point is that nonetheless it's a bit overkill. I do realize and acknowledge the fact that "being respectful" is a rule that is strictly backed up by the Badlion staff, but saying a petty word like "noob" isn't that disrespectful. GetDisciplined appointed me when partially addressing why it is that saying things like "noob" are mutable offences, by saying "Well, if someone went to you in real life and called you a noob, wouldn't you be mad?", I responded by saying "no" and that I would only laugh at the person doing that, because that would've been in "real life". This is an Indie Block Game, that many people take seriously and say many more harsh things other than "noob", and those are the things I can see fit for a mute. I know I'm not in any sort of position to CHANGE the rule, but that's not what I'm here to do… I'm just curious as to why some people find the chat to be such a delicate piece of work that must be polished whenever someone says the slightest offensive thing. And like I said earlier, 'noob' isn't even that offensive of a word. It all depends on how the recipient perceives the message they're sent. In the case I witness, the person being called a "noob" didn't even respond, almost as if it was such a horrible comeback they completely disregarded it all together, just as I would expect the "professional staff" (I put that in quotes because a player who was backing up the person who muted, was calling all of badlion staff professional (I know you guys are good at what you do, this is just one case in particular I'm scrutinizing)) to do.

I'm not JUST talking about the word "noob" either, I've seen a few other words in chat that were taken as insults when they probably shouldn't have been.

Not like it means anything to anyone reading this thread but I moderate a separate server along with a few other people, and the things we completely eliminate in the chat are sufficient enough to maintain a balanced community. Badlion has it going in the direction whereas if you say something that has the potential to be perceived as hurtful, you'll be muted no questions asked.

Anyways, my little rant ends here. I want to see what you guys think, players included. I'm just curious, as for I'm a bit new to the server.

I guess it depends on the mod handing out the mute. The word "noob" is an insult/disrespectful term, but it's also commonly used as a joke reference. So I personally wouldn't mute for someone just saying noob. I mute people who say like "eat shit you noob" or "noob faggot get good" things along those lines. Do you by chance remember the name of who was muted? I'm curious to review the punishment page of that player. ty

No haha, I don't remember the players name, nor the punisher. I only remember seeing the red chat message"**** has been muted for do not call other players 'noobs' please". I agree w/ you completely btw, the context of the message sent has an impact on how it's received. But, as I just said, he was muted for calling another player a noob, not using full-force-hostility ontop of saying "noob".

Noob is not an insult/disrespectful term. It's just a shortened form of "new/inexperienced player". It of course can be used as an insult (and it's true that in most cases it is used this way), but the word itself isn't a derogatory term.

The word noob is a shortened term for "newbie". Newbie literally means "new player" So if someone comes up to you in real life and calls you a noob, slump them and then teach them that you're not a "new player"

Life lesson #34

Lol if that's life lesson 34 I don't know what the following will be, because that's a pretty ridiculous one. I do understand GetDisciplined's point though; He's just defending the person who muted the player because they were worried that the word "noob" may've been taken out of proportion and enhaled through the wrong tubes; they were offended. In reality: I do not think it actually mattered. Staff does what they have to, and then some. Which at times can have a problematic result, not causing anything other than people like me, to post silly little threads like this. And, let me just address the title of this thread. It's not a huge deal. I'm just pointing it out :D

TL:DR- He thinks staff shouldn't mute for light, not that serious offenses like noob.

Yeah, I think I'm a very strict staff for carrying out mutes, but I wouldn't personally mute for 'noob'.

If I'm remembering correctly, it was a trial mod who carried out the punishment. I'm not even sure if Trial Mods have that permission but I do know that GetDisciplined and another staff member (with a green nametag in [tab]) were the only 2 authority members online at the time.
