It's not always sneaky, it's also used to prevent people from snooping on you when your at a public wifi hotspot.
So the basics are:
You send all your data (ex. A youtube video) to the VPN server (encrypted) and the VPN server connects to the website your looking for and sends that data back to you.
Think of it as you telling your friend to tell someone else something. That someone else tells your friend and your friend tells you what someone else said.
A good explanation, but a VPN can simply be defined as routing traffic through another computer on another network, irrespective of encryption or location.

VPNS are illegal on BADLION anyway, id be impossible to tell whether there hackers or not so that is out. BTW currently the most accurate "check if censored in china site" is en.greatfire.org and according to them, badlion.net isnt blocked.
https://en.greatfire.org/badlion.net
Although if you want to "enter china" they have put up laws on how you MUST give the government a blackdoor and encryption keys. Minecraft isn't widely played in China although you can (as I did when I visited china back in the summer.)
You can buy minecraft in China as they have chinese translations on their website (although im not really sure on this)
Currently minecraft.net isn't blocked (this could change if china tightens the firewall or people start playing it and for whatever reason it "defaces" the government's "goals")
https://en.greatfire.org/minecraft.net
If badlion were to create a asian server they should host it in Japan, as the fourth most visits for minecraft is in the country.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/minecraft.net
(PS: I know that this may make you think that im a "communist china FTW" kind of guy, but im not. Just ask @SuperSandwish)

An asia server in Japan gives only good ping to east asia though
Best spot would either be in Singapore or Hong Kong

Welcome back. It felt like you've been gone forever.
Did you really expect him to be gone for long? People only make "quitting" threads for attention
