I'm really bad at it as well but all I can give is to warm up before you play any game. If you are sluggish then you do really bad. Make yourself hyper like I do.

I'm not even close to being the best at BuildUHC, but I think of myself as decent, so I may be able to tell you some things that work for me personally when I am looking to win a BuildUHC match. #1 You have to lava, but not spam it. Lava can be the turning point in the battle if you are able to place it strategically. You mostly want to try to lava in the very beginning of the match and the very end. If you do it too much your opponent will know that you want to lava and will be prepared for it, but also, if you spam lava, you are defenseless to your opponent's hits. So do it every so often, but don't overuse it. #2 Rod, but don't spam. Again with this one, rods can initiate a combo, but if you spam it and aren't the fastest hotkey-er, more free hits for your opponent. It is best to rod when you are going into a fight, or when there is at least a 5 block separation between you and your opponent. And if you aren't the best at rods practice, because that is all you can do to get better. That is mostly what I want to say about melee so hopefully this helps a little bit.
