This has been a problem since the party splits/FFAs came out I think. Basically, when you choose to do a party FFA with an event kit, instead of starting an FFA fight it will start a party split fight.

Also, when selecting event kits and custom kits sometimes you have to open the menu multiple times in order for your kits to show up properly.
