Tier list and character matchups having much greater impact. Where in melee you could beat an opponent even with a lower tiered character because characters were more balanced throughout, the priority numbers on brawl characters are far more broken, and some characters are clearly just better than the other (pikachu's down smash absorbs ganon's warlock punch, meta-knight and snake being SSS tier). There are also broken matchups in the game from elements such as marth's infinite grab against ness/lucas
Easy execution of skills and slower gameplay in brawl - because players need to react to things and execute combos faster, it takes more skill, and fighting game is all about display of good skill. This is why so many starcraft 1 players hate on starcraft 2, and why dota players hate lol - it's not because they hate change or that they're used to the original, it's because they dumb down the game play so lot of high level plays that would require tons of skill or practice become accessible to low level players, thereby reducing the difference between skilled and unskilled players. For example, in melee even a player that was little bit better than me could beat me consistently, while I could destroy anyone who were worse than me, while in brawl it seems like I have a fair chance of beating opponents that have been playing brawl for much longer just by using a high-tiered character and learning some simple tricks like snakedash
The skill ceiling - To me the most important thing in a competitive game is its skill ceiling and that mastering the game is an extremely high bar or nonexistent.
-> tl:dr - tier list/matchups matter too much, and melee has far higher skill ceiling. I don't think brawl is a bad game, and it would have been a great game had it been its own game, but because it's a sequel it unfortunately gets compared to melee which is probably one of the greatest fighting games of all time."
