Religion is, as far as I'm concerned, no more than a myth. I believe that science is a more believable explanation for the creation (and demise) of the world we know.

I'll take this thread seriously for a moment to explain what religion really is. Religion is used in two ways, first way being to control, guide, or manipulate your way of life whether by the book you read, or those who preach it at you. Second part of religion is to give you comfort with death. All forms of religions promise you something after death whether it be eternity in Heaven or 72 virgins. Truth of the matter is, when you die or someone you love dies they then cease to exist entirely. There is nothing more after death. You dissapear from existance, you are not reborn into something or somewhere, you are dead.

Oh, hey there Mr. Dawkins I never knew you played BL

mfw it's already an established fact most of the pentateuch is metaphorical (with the exception of leviticus being Jewish law)

We also need a Trump vs. Sanders thread and a thread for arguing about abortion.

Edit: @Aymbaut Good point. This will be my last post on this account. Have to make a new forum user, but for now I'll just keep editing this post and tagging people for my replies.

I would like a Trump v Sanders thread but it would end up being 12 years olds saying TRUMP IS RACIST!!1!1!1! every other second and promoting sander's stupid economic policy.

How do you judge metaphor vs literal? Isn't that extremely subjective? For example I could posit that the new testament is metaphorical.
Also to add to that. I'm pretty sure a fair bit of the torah is claiming to come directly from god so. (or at least god is involved in alot of the stories)

IN MY OPINION I think religion has been a root of many problems in this world and I personally think the world would be better without religions.

Again, this is just my thoughts.

It's sad to see that most of the human race are still religious, even after all the scientific advances there have been

I 100% disagree. Science and religion can coexist, and they do for many people.

The conventional wisdom is that religious people who work in science will have more doubts about their faith, but the survey revealed the opposite: Evangelical scientists practice religion more than evangelical Protestants in the general population.

Same old same old argument. "But tha crusades!!! de inquersition!! and the uh uh uh duh duh duh the Ireland!!"

123 out of over 1700 wars have been caused by religion, and war is the greatest problem with the world despite it being necessary for we as the human race to evolve.
As well as that, other problems such as world hunger and poverty are mostly being solved by… religious charities? Yeah religion causes such a problem.

Think of it like this - Joseph McCarthy said Communism was the root of many problems in the world and the world would be better without it, and communism is an ideology like all religions, and you said Religion has been a root of many problems in this world and the world would be better without it. Basically you're a reverse McCarthy nice.

The torah is jewish law which is why it was made irrelevant upon Jesus' death on the cross.

You can't say religious because most religions now embrace science. Islam is really the only major religion that doesn't accept science. I mean look at Christianity (real Christianity like Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, not Protestants or Evangelists) and Hinduism are two of the three main major religions, and they have embraced science. Out of the top 5 even top 7 Islam is the only one to ignore science.

Islam doesn't "deny science" and Christianity doesn't uniformly accept science. Sects of each deny science. People (Christians) who deny evolution and global warming for religious reasons still exist, and likely will exist for a long time.

Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy accept science, the anti-christ false pope Francis himself said that evolution and the big bang theory are true, and I hope I don't hurt your feelings but Islam doesn't accept science. That's the cold hard truth. Look at the middle east, it's pretty shitty when it comes to scientific advancement. The same goes for Indonesia and Central Asia.

Religion and science don't necessarily contradict, and neither is science the alternative to religion. I don't like getting into religious arguments, but I feel it's ignorant to not acknowledge the existence of an all-powerful being and instead only focus on worldly affairs. Science can't—and will never be able to—answer everything, and putting all your faith into the observable is beyond me.

Where did you get this from? No religion "ignores" science — you simply have separate people who individually interpret verses in different ways and form their own opinion about the relationship between religion and science.

You're just making unjustified assumptions now.

I've already explained how your premises are wrong.
Are you saying that the Torah wasn't metaphorical before Jesus died on the cross? So the flood happened before he did and now it didn't? How the hell does this make any sense? You're positing reverse causality.

Edit (objection I): All it says is the old testament law is changed. Not the stories or ANYTHING. You have to remember a large portion of your religion are science denying young earth creationists. If it states it so blatantly then why does this sect exist?

Edit 2 (objection II): So you're saying that these deaths are ok?
http://addictivelists.com/10-biggest-religious-wars-ever-fought/
Millions of people have died because of religion and in the name of religion.

Even though it shouldn't be our #1 goal of course imo I think the world would be better w/o it.

Edit 3 (objection III): It's funny because science is completely antithetical to religion and pretty much proves it all wrong. Nonetheless you are committing the no true scotsman fallacy here: I mean look at Christianity (real Christianity like Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, not Protestants or Evangelists)
