My Opinion on Last weekend's tournament..
Posted on 25 January 2016 - 08:11 PM
-=Checks and Concerns=-Today I wanted to make this post to go over things that I thought worked well for this past weekend's $1k 5v5 SG/Build tournament. In this post I have some checks (things done well) and concerns (things needed to be fixed). *Note* I will not be covering the lag issues as that is quite obvious lol.
——————————-
Checks:
Format- The format for this tournament was fantastic, I really enjoyed it. The groups leading into the final 32 double elimination bracket worked really well (it took a lot of time, I'll cover that later). As well as the fact that you had to beat the opposing team by 2 maps instead of having a BO3, BO5, etc. This lead to more fair matches as in some scenarios one team could be better with the SG kit, or vice versa, and a BO3 could've lead to one kit being used more then the other, which in turn could decide matches.
Prize Pool- This idea came late to this tournament as it was implemented at the very end. What I'm talking about is how their was an additional prize for 2nd place as well as 1st. It would've been very strange for just one team to have won a cash prize, but instead it had made more sense for at least two teams to win.
Competition- The competition was great and it made this tournament exciting to spectate. More exciting then past tournaments because more teamwork and strat calling is necessary with 5v5 as opposed to a simple 1v1 or 2v2. And as we all know, a competitive eSport is typically team based.

Concerns:
Ruling- As you might have noticed we had a lot of DDos attacks on the players in the finals. A lot. It really killed the atmosphere heading into it. Honestly, a more firm rule book needs to be put in place so this doesn't happen. Not that we can stop these attacks but the rule book would be there so we know what needs to happen and so the admins aren't making rulings based purely off their personal judgement.
Tournament Size- I am so glad there were so many players/teams participating, it really showed that this scene is still alive and ready to grow. But the concerning thing about this is how long it took. It was ridiculous how many small teams played (which in itself isn't bad) in one day. What this calls for is a qualifier. There should be a qualifier for all the small teams a week in advance or so and the winners of that should move into the final bracket with all the powerhouse teams. This is because all the big teams shouldn't have to wait an hour or so just to play an easier opponent and win within 5 minutes. It doesn't make sense. And there is only going to be more and more teams popping up and wanting to join, within this growing scene.
Production/Schedule- The first aspect of this point is production. It was very poorly done in the sense that it wasn't organized well (good job nonetheless @MasterGberry). There should be a dedicated twitch/streaming channel for tournaments and such with casters and analysts. If I was a complete randy that was interested in trying to get into the scene, it would be very hard to with not very professional streams. Second part is the scheduling. Teams played whenever they had time to and there wasn't a direct schedule for when certain teams would play. It's hard to root for your favorite team if you have no idea when they'll be playing.

Thanks for taking the time to read my opinions on the first Badlion 5v5 tournament. I'm really interested for what else this scene has to offer.

Half of this was already mentioned in this thread https://www.badlion.net/forum/thread/91309No point in making separate posts about it.
